Don't be afraid of the dark

I am going to entice you this morning with deep dark sludgy hues that look fabulous on walls no matter your style. You need a certain amount of bravery sure but the end result is sophisticated, confident, grown up and stylish. Dark colours seem daunting, I know but all I can say is that they are incredibly easy to incorporate into almost any decor. If nervous try a dark palette in a small room - powder room, entry or office. You can soften the impact by contrasting with liberal amounts of a neutral. I paint out everything, trim, ceilings, floors so then the furnishings magically stand out and add the wow factor but that may be a step too far for some. Ilse Crawford is a designer I have admired for ages and her most recent project photographed by Magnus Marding graced the pages of Australia's Vogue Living recently. This is a regency house and a family home - deep dark chocolate walls add the wow factor and the Eames chairs a lovely shot of colour.Ilse has indeed softened the impact by keeping the trim and the ceiling white - a beautiful contrast. When going dark its fundamental to use high voltage shots of colour otherwise your scheme will look and feel somewhat depressing. Its a tantalising combination chocolate coupled with red with the odd dose of yellow and turquoise thrown into the mix.
